I can’t believe Summer is over! I’m going to pretend it’s not  🙂 and we usually have a warm beautiful fall here in S. Ca so I can keep pretending for awhile longer!

I just got back from the Pacific NW and a had a wonderful time with family & friends, picking Blackberries, Evergreen Huckleberries and harvesting wild Greens like Stinging Nettles, Dandelion, Burdock, Plaintain, Curly Dock, and Horsetail.

I even picked some salty Sea Beans from an island in the Pacific NW San Juans and have been adding it to my salads! It adds a tasty salty crunch.

Jack It Up

I was very pleasantly surprised to find that both Jackfruit & Rambutan make excellent travel foods! Who knew?? I brought a few pounds with me, and was overjoyed to enjoy these Luscious Tropical Treats and share them with everyone!

Oh Deer!

Besides the usual adorable menagerie of squirrels, raccoons and birds, we actually saw a family of Deer on the road just up from my parents house, a mother & two fawns. Which is a rare sight for that area!

It makes me wonder, where did they come from? Do they have to travel through neighborhoods & busy roads just to find enough wild plants to eat?

A deer is a large animal that ideally, in the right environment, can eat up to 7 lbs of greens per day!

Who’s Paving Over the Pacific Northwest?

It’s hard for me not to get depressed when I see how much development is happening where I grew up, north of Seattle. It used to be a lot greener when I was growing up, with forests and meadows to play in everywhere!

It seems like the Forests and natural green habitats are being clear cut one by one, to make way for huge apartment complexes, enormous storage facilities and strip malls.

Forests that my brother & I grew up playing in have been cut down, paved over and turned into neighborhoods.

These wooded areas and empty lots full of weeds are thriving ecosystems of native plants, flowers and creatures being bulldozed to the ground.

My heart goes out to the animals & birds who are displaced when their homes are destroyed. A lot of people don’t realize that animals are very territorial, just like humans. And they compete over the same resources.

We destroy their territory and food sources then wonder why bears, coyotes and raccoons invade our neighborhoods.  It’s because we clear cut their neighborhood and their food too. They can’t buy their next meal at the grocery store like we can!

Grow Your Own Chocolate Tree

Lately I been obsessed with growing everything; greens, vegetables, fruit trees! Which is strange, because although I’ve always greatly admired gardeners, I never actually wanted all the work & dirty fingers of growing things myself. I just wanted to eat them!

But when the cute little Black Sapote seeds I lovingly planted actually sprouted and started growing, something changed for me….and now I want to grow everything, all at once!

Do things have to grow in season? Can’t I just grow every fruit & vegetable right now and the same time, continuously all year round? I’m excited!

You’re lucky, because soon I’ll be selling a few of these beautiful little Black Sapote Trees. They’re getting bigger every day!

Please subscribe to our Newsetter (top right) to find out when these go on sale.

Super rare & exotic, these Black Sapote trees can do very well in our Southern CA climate and produce a lot of fruit. And you could have your VERY own Chocolate Pudding Fruit Tree 🙂
